The Spanish city Lora del Rio celebrated on Saturday the start of operations of the 2-MW La Matallana photovoltaic (PV) plant.

The PV plant was developed and is now being managed by Spanish cooperative Som Energia with contributions from over 1,600 members. It has an estimated production of 3,400 MWh per year, enough to meet the annual electricity demand of some 1,370 households.

With a required investment of EUR 1.8 million (USD 2m), La Matallana is expected to offset some 914,600 kg per year of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the local government said.

The solar facility is part of a EUR-5-million investment from the cooperative, which includes the construction of total of three PV farms. The La Florida project, also located in Lora del Rio, is to break ground shortly. The Tahal scheme, in Almeria, started construction works in mid-September. Som Energia expects these two plants to become operational in the next months.
