The consortium comprised of a Vietnamese conglomerate and three South Korean power producers has been awarded the contract to build a VND54 trillion (US$2.3 billion) liquified natural gas (LNG) power plant project in Quang Tri province of Vietnam.

The 1.5 GW project is the first stage of the Hai Lang LNG electricity center in Quang Tri province, north Vietnam, which will be delivered in three stages. Besides the 1.5 GW LNG power plant, the first stage also includes an LNG port with the capacity to handle LNG carriers ranging in size from 170,000 to 226,000 cubic meters, carrying 1.5 million tonnes of LNG per year.

The main investor in the project is Vietnam’s T&T Group, contributing 40% of the total investment. The other investors are Hanwha Energy Corporation, Korea Southern Power, and Korea Gas Corporation. The first stage is expected to become operational by 2027 and the total generating capacity of the complex will reach 4.5 GW once stages 2 and 3 are completed. The Vietnamese government has approved the construction of the Phase 1 facility.
