The South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has launched a tender for the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) that intends to procure up to 2 GW of energy capacity that would seek to address the chronic short-term energy supply gap in the energy grid.
The program will procure from a range of energy sources and technologies that would reduce the utilization of diesel-based peaking electrical generators. The proposed technical solutions should be dispatchable and are able to provide a range of support services to the grid system operator.
The projects included in the RMIPPPP should be operational by the end of June 2022.
