Sojitz Corporation has announced its decision to cancel the construction of a 109 MW wind power project in Hokkaido, Japan. The reason for the cancellation was due to growing opposition from locals about the environmental impact of the project and soaring material costs. The decision is part of a recent trend in the wind industry and is a major setback for the Japanese government's goal to increase green energy production, particularly in Hokkaido.
The wind plant was supposed to be constructed in state-owned forests located in the city of Otaru and the town of Yoichi in Hokkaido. It aimed to have large wind turbines that would operate for 20 years from 2029.
Sojitz Corporation operates as a general trading company worldwide.
