Scottish Ministers grants planning consent for SSE's 80 MW wind farm repowering project
SSE Renewables has been granted with the planning consent by the Scottish Ministers for the development of a Tangy wind farm repowering project on the Kintyre peninsula.
Located around 10km north-west of Campbeltown, the existing Tangy I and II wind farms have been generating clean, renewable energy since 2003 as part of SSE Renewables portfolio of nearly 2GW of operational onshore wind farms across the UK and Ireland.
Tangy IV will see the existing 22-turbine site reduced to 16 turbines whilst increasing the installed capacity nearly fourfold from the current 18.7MW up to a maximum of 80MW. To enable this the turbine tip-height will increase by nearly 20m from the previously consented 130m to 149.9m.
The reduction in turbine numbers reflects the rapid development of wind turbine technology and will allow SSE Renewables to take advantage of much more powerful turbines to maximize the energy generation potential and efficiency of the site.
SSE Renewables will now consider the options for a route to market for the project ahead of taking a final investment decision.
