Indian-born British businessman Sanjeev Gupta has received the planning approval from the South Australian Government for its planned 280 MW solar photovoltaic farm that will be built in Whyalla.
The so-called Cultana Solar Farm will be developed by Simec Zen Energy Australia and will be financed by Gupta's AUD1 billion (US$690 million) fund.
The AUD350 million (US$242 million) solar project is set to generate up to 600GWh of electricity annually. The project will create 350 jobs during the construction phase, and 10 full-time operations jobs after completion. The project will be built on a vacant area close to the Whyalla Steelworks, which presently undergoes a significant expansion by Gupta's GFG Alliance. Prior to the construction, Simec needs to submit Environmental Management Plans for both the construction and the operation of the project.
