RWE has signed a five-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Thames Water to supply it with clean electricity from RWE’s Camster onshore wind farm in Scotland. Under the agreement, RWE will deliver about 132 GWh of renewable power annually from December 2025 through 2030, enough to cover roughly 15 % of Thames Water’s energy needs and help reduce its carbon emissions by replacing fossil-fired electricity with wind power.
The Camster onshore wind farm is located in Caithness, Scotland and was commissioned in 2012. It has 25 turbines and a generation capacity of 50 MW. To date, the wind farm has contributed £200,000 from its community fund to local projects that benefit the community.
The UK’s largest water company powers its operations entirely with renewable electricity through a combination of self-generated energy, green supply contracts and power purchase agreements. Since 1930, Thames Water has reduced its carbon emissions by nearly 70% and has been generating renewable energy at its sites for almost a century. In 2024/25, the company produced and consumed 475.3 GWh of renewable electricity, meeting 25.8% of its total energy demand. Looking ahead to 2030, Thames Water aims to build on the progress of the past decade by further cutting emissions through increased renewable generation, greater energy and fuel efficiency, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, the adoption of lower-carbon processes, and the development of a more sustainable supply chain.
