RWE has secured approval from the Welsh Government to build a 60 MW onshore wind farm in North Wales, known as the Alwen Forest Wind Farm.
RWE has received approval to develop the Alwen Forest Wind Farm, a project designed to generate enough renewable electricity to power up to 70,600 homes. The wind farm will feature nine turbines, each reaching 200 metres in height, situated near the Alwen Reservoir in North Wales, spanning the boundary between Conwy and Denbighshire county councils. The planning application also included a proposed connection to the National Grid through an existing substation at Clocaenog Forest. Once completed, the Alwen Forest Wind Farm will support Welsh targets for local ownership through a community benefit society being established by RWE in collaboration with Community Energy Wales. With approval now granted, the next steps involve securing a route to market and reaching a final investment decision, with construction expected to begin as early as 2027.
The project would be located on land which is managed by Natural Resources Wales and owned by the Welsh Ministers and Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.
