Red Eléctrica de España (REE) has completed the Balearic Islands' electrical connection and connects the entire archipelago with the Peninsula and the European grid. The development is a result after passing the various tests and trials carried out prior to entry into operation of the submarine electrical interconnection between Menorca and Mallorca.
Red Eléctrica de España has completed the various phases of the project's execution, from the preliminary tendering, awarding and installation of the cable to the execution of the submarine laying and the subsequent work to protect the link to through its burial in the seabed, to maximize the integrity and security of the installation within 18 months since the Council of Ministers declared its public utility and granted administrative authorization for the construction of the project on November 2, 2018.
After its commissioning, the infrastructure will be presented to the Balearic society in an official act, which will be held in Menorca in July and will be attended by representatives of Red Eléctrica, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the Balearic Government and other administrations involved.
The link consists of a 132 kV tripolar land-submarine cable, weighing around 2,300 tons (56.5 kg per meter) and connecting the Ciudadela and Cala Mesquida substations, in Menorca and Mallorca, respectively. The underwater route is 41.7 km, with a maximum depth of 86 meters, and the terrestrial runs 12.5 km in Menorca and 742 meters in Mallorca. The land sections of the link are buried on both islands.
