Covestro has signed a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Orsted for a portion of the power produced by the 471 MW Mockingbird Solar Center in Lamar County, Texas, USA. The 90 MW agreement has the potential to reduce Scope 2 emissions from Covestro's third-largest production site, located in Baytown.
The facility is installed on about 4,900 acres of land and has the capability to power over 80,000 homes over the course of a year.
Covestro has set climate neutrality goals in 2022, including obtaining power from renewable sources such as wind and solar power. Agreements like this VPPA with Orsted are essential in assisting the comppany to reach these goals.
The solar project will help meet the energy needs of Texas during peak demand periods by providing reliable and flexible solarpowered electricity and is expected to begin operation in late 2024.
