Ørsted has commenced the construction of 70 MW FlagshipONE, the largest e-methanol project in Europe. Located in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, the facility will supply growing fleet of methanol-powered vessels. Currently, there are 110 such vessels in operation or on order.
FlagshipONE is situated within the premises of Hörneborgsverket, a biomass-fired combined heat and power plant operated by Övik Energi. The project will utilize renewable electricity and biogenic carbon dioxide captured from Hörneborgsverket to produce e-methanol. Additionally, steam, process water, and cooling water from Hörneborgsverket will be utilized, and any excess heat generated during the e-methanol production process will be returned to Övik Energi to support their district heating supply.
Liquid Wind initially developed FlagshipONE, but the project was acquired by Ørsted in December 2022. With the final investment decision (FID) reached, Ørsted is now moving forward with the construction of this pioneering e-methanol facility, contributing to the decarbonization of the shipping industry and advancing the transition towards greener energy solutions.
