Ofgem approves development of Shetland transmission project

UK energy market regulator Ofgem has approved the development of the 600 MW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) subsea transmission link between mainland Scotland and the Shetland Isles, proposed by Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE-T). 

The project involves the development of a high voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea transmission link that seeks to connect the 457 MW Viking Wind Farm to the grid. Ofgem approves the proposal on the condition that by the end of 2020 that the Viking Energy Wind Farm (VEWF) will be operational. 

SSEN Transmission, the developer of the Shetland transmission project, has awarded the turnkey contract to NKT for the supply of equipment for the project.
