The New South Wales government has given its approval for the development of an 80 MWp solar farm with battery storage near Somerton, approximately 25km West of Tamworth. The proposed site is in an area of agricultural grazing land at 2209 Soldier’s Settlement Road, 7 km south of Somerton. The land is a single title of approximately 230 hectares of which about 80% will be utilized for rows of solar panel installations with significant spacing between them. The remaining land will be available for farming and vegetation.
Tamworth Solar Farm is at an early stage of development. It is expected to generate 155 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity a year – enough energy to power the equivalent of around 30,000 homes – while avoiding 131,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
