Mitsui has secured the acquisition of a 49% stake in Kassø Midco, the owner of the combined 304 MW solar plant and e-methanol facility in Kassø, Aabenraa, Denmark.
The Kassø solar farm, operational since the first half of 2023, produces enough clean energy to power over 80,000 European households. The Kassø e-methanol facility, currently under construction, is slated to become operational in the first half of 2024, with the installation of the entire 52 MW electrolyzer expected later in the same year. This facility will manufacture low-carbon methanol by synthesizing green hydrogen, generated by feeding renewable-based electricity into an electrolyzer, and green carbon dioxide (CO₂) captured from biomass sources. It will boast an annual production capacity of up to 42,000 tonnes.
Once completed, the e-methanol from the facility will be supplied to various sectors, including Maersk, Novo Nordisk, and the LEGO Group, enabling them to replace products derived from fossil fuels and reduce CO₂ emissions. Additionally, the e-methanol facility will generate surplus heat, providing district heating for approximately 2,500 local households.
