Vineyard Wind, the 800 MW project off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, selects MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as the preferred wind turbine supplier for the project.
The 800 MW Vineyard Wind project is located off the coast of Massachusetts, in the north-east of the USA, at the leased 160,000 acres area south of Martha's Vineyard, and 14 miles from the nearest shore. The project consists of an array of V164-9.5 MW wind turbines, spaced at least eight-tenths of a mile apart, that are each capable of delivering 8 MW of power, at water depths of 37 to 49 meters (121 to 161 feet).
Submarine cables are installed along a route from the project site to a landing point on shore, buried up to six feet below the sea floor. The upland cables are buried along proposed routes in either Yarmouth or Barnstable.
From the onshore cable landing site, the route extends to the grid connection point inland. The route runs underground primarily along public roads but also includes segments within other previously disturbed corridors such as an existing utility right-of-way. After the initial installation, all maintenance work is accessed via installed manholes.
Installation is scheduled on 2021. Once the turbine supply order is confirmed, MHI Vestas will begin the process of local hiring and supply chain investment to support the project as it nears the construction phase.
