Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) has received approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) for the 20 MW O'Brien Solar Fields, to be built on approximately 160 acres of land at the corner of Lacy Road and South Seminole Highway in Fitchburg, Dane County, Wisconsin.
The project is expected to cost approximately US$32 million. The construction is expected to begin this year with the solar array generating electricity in 2021.
The project consists of about 60,000 solar panels. Under MGE's innovative Renewable Energy Rider (RER), the power generated by the solar plant will be distributed to local businesses, municipalities, and public institutions.
The RER agreements involve a partnership between MGE and the following customers:
Designing, construction, development, and operation of the project are taken care of by EDF Renewables. Once the construction is complete MGE will become the owner of the solar field and lease the land from the O'Brien family.
