The Australian government has granted environmental approval for UK developer Lightsource BP to build a 750 MW solar farm coupled with an up to 750 MW/3,000 MWh battery energy storage system located at Sandy Creek, New South Wales, Australia.

If realized at its intended capacity, the Sandy Creek project will outstrip Acen's 720 MW New England Solar Farm, currently under construction near Uralla, New South Wales. Additionally, it will claim the title of the largest battery in the country, surpassing the 1,200 MW/2,400 MWh Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub being developed by Equis Australia in Victoria. Anticipated to generate up to 1.7 million MWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the energy requirements of around 200,000 households, the Sandy Creek project will connect to the national electricity grid via the proposed Elong Elong Energy Hub, part of the Central-West Orana REZ transmission project being developed by EnergyCo.
