KenGen has planned to Construct a 1 GW Wind Farm in the northeastern region of Kenya.
The project is planned for Marsabit County, located in the same region as the operational 310 MW Lake Turkana wind farm, which has been supplying nearly 20% of Kenya's electricity since 2019. The new wind farm will be developed in multiple phases and is expected to commence operations in 2028. KenGen will secure 75% of the project's needed investment through debt funding, while the company will fund the remaining portion internally. The wind farm project's feasibility studies are being conducted by KenGen's in-house consultancy firm, Sofreco.
