Menter Mon Morlais Ltd, a subsidiary of social enterprise Menter Mon, has awarded a GBP 10 million (USD 13.5 million) contract to North Wales firm Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK to deliver the infrastructure work for the Morlais tidal stream energy scheme off the north west coast of Holy Island.
The Morlais project is an approved tidal energy initiative with a capacity of up to 240 MW, offering tidal technology developers a site to install and test their devices offshore. The initial turbines are scheduled to begin generating electricity in 2026. The ongoing stage, called the Cydnerth Project, is backed by £9 million in funding from the North Wales Growth Deal.
Jones Bros, based in Ruthin, will handle the cabling work to enhance the grid connection in preparation for Morlais becoming operational. Morlais recently confirmed that the GBP16 million (US$21.5 million) Cydnerth project has entered the construction phase, aiming to expand the site’s grid capacity from 18 MW to a potential 240 MW.
