Jones Bros Secures £46.5m Contract for 45MW Carno III Wind Farm in Wales

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has secured a £46.5 million (US$63 million) principal contractor contract from Carno 3 LLP, a joint venture between Amegni Renewables and Gresham House, to deliver infrastructure and civil works for the 10-turbine 45 MW Carno III Wind Farm in Powys, mid Wales.

With an investment of more than £100 million (US$136 million), the Carno III project is expected to produce sufficient renewable energy to meet the annual electricity needs of around 46,000 homes while avoiding approximately 65,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Once operational, the three Carno wind farms, all operated locally by Amegni, will comprise 78 turbines with a combined installed capacity of nearly 100 MW. Collectively, the projects are expected to provide around £250,000 a year in community benefit payments to the mid Wales region.

Under its £46.5 million contract, Jones Bros is also undertaking key grid reinforcement works, including the installation of 20km of underground cable linking the Welshpool substation with the connection point south of Abermule. The work will strengthen part of SP Energy Networks’ existing 132kV electricity grid in mid Wales. The Ruthin-based Tier 1 contractor will also be responsible for constructing the turbine foundations, a new on-site substation and control building, and associated cabling infrastructure. The scope further includes upgrading more than 4.4km of existing access tracks, building 4.7km of new tracks, and carrying out improvements to existing highways to support equipment deliveries. Construction is already underway, with the wind farm scheduled for completion in autumn 2027.

Amegni Renewables is a local business formed by farmers from Carno and currently operates the Carno 1 and Carno 2 wind farms. The company has developed Carno III Wind Farm and maintains a focus on keeping the benefits of the project locally. The Carno III site includes more than 350 hectares of new habitat enhancement and peat restoration measures. The development also includes significant upgrades to the local public rights of way network, alongside a comprehensive community benefit package totalling more than £3.5m over the life of the wind farm.
