The consortium of companies led by VNG Gasspeicher GmbH and Uniper SE has secured support from the German government after it has received notification of EUR34 million (US$40.24 million) federal grant for the development of hydrogen production and storage project in Saxony-Anhalt.
The aim of the joint project is to map the entire value chain for green hydrogen in southern Germany. The energy from a wind farm ( under development) will be converted into hydrogen using a large-scale electrolysis plant with a capacity of around 30 MW. The hydrogen will be supplied to the chemical industry in Leuna via a 20-kilometer pipeline. In the second phase of the project, the salt cavern planned for hydrogen storage, which is almost 180 meters high, will be completed and integrated into the value chain from 2026.
The project has a total investment of around EUR140 million (US$163.94 million). The consortium of companies for the project consist of Terrawatt Planungsgesellschaft mbH, Uniper, VNG Gasspeicher GmbH (VGS), ONTRAS Gastransport GmbH (ONTRAS), DBI - Gastechnologisches Institut gGmbH Freiberg (DBI) and VNG AG.
