Australia’s Fortescue Metals Group, through its subsidiary Pilbara Energy Generation Pty Ltd, has filed environmental documents with the West Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for the construction of a 5.4 GW renewable energy hub in the Pilbara region.
The project will be constructed near the coastal town of Onslow and 170 km west of the Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) Eliwana mine site. It will consist of a 2,040 MW wind farm, about 340 turbines, and up to 3,333 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity with an energy storage system of about 9,100 MWh.
A 220kV transmission line will connect the project through its Uaroo Hub main substation to a substation at the Eliwana mining operations. The project is estimated to be around AUD10 billion (US$7.22 billion).
