EnBW has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of its He Dreiht offshore wind farm by installing the first of 64 Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines.
The He Dreiht project, located approximately 85 km northwest of Borkum and 110 km west of Helgoland in the German North Sea, is set to become Germany's largest offshore wind farm, boasting a total capacity of 960 MW. Notably, He Dreiht is being developed without state subsidies, following EnBW's successful zero-cent bid in Germany’s 2017 offshore wind auction. The project represents a EUR 2.4 billion (US$ 2.7 billion) investment and is expected to supply renewable electricity to approximately 1.1 million households upon its planned commissioning in late 2025.
The installation process involves over 500 workers and more than 60 vessels, with the offshore construction coordinated from EnBW’s Hamburg office. The turbine components are transported from Esbjerg, Denmark, using the installation vessel “Wind Orca.” Simultaneously, internal cabling work is underway, with 64 submarine cables totaling around 100 kilometers being laid to connect the turbines to the grid. A consortium comprising Allianz Capital Partners, AIP, and Norges Bank Investment Management holds a 49.9% stake in the project. He Dreiht is a pivotal element in EnBW’s strategy to expand its renewable energy capacity from 6.6 GW to over 10 GW by 2030.
