ContourGlobal inaugurated the Quillagua photovoltaic solar plant with 221 MWp of installed capacity and 1.2 GWh of storage located in the municipality of Maria Elena, in the Antofagasta region, Chile.

Quillagua is a 221 MWp solar photovoltaic facility equipped with a 1.2 GWh battery storage system, enabling it to supply 200 MW of power for up to 6.2 hours after sunset—earning it the title of Latin America’s largest solar plant with integrated storage. The project features over 452,000 solar panels, 5,000 solar trackers, 267 battery modules, 44 transformer stations, and 90 inverters.

Quillagua forms part of a broader development initiative that also includes the Victor Jara plant in the Tarapacá region. This second facility features 231 MWp of solar photovoltaic capacity and 1.3 GWh of battery storage and is expected to be operational in the second half of the year—several months earlier than originally scheduled. ContourGlobal acquired both projects—totaling 452 MWp of solar capacity and 2.5 GWh of battery storage—from Grenergy at the end of 2024, marking its entry into the Chilean market. Once fully operational, the portfolio is expected to produce around 1,300 GWh annually, establishing ContourGlobal, backed by U.S. firm KKR, as a major player in Chile’s renewable energy sector, where the company aims to expand and invest further.
