Grenergy has announced that 105 BYD batteries have arrived at the Chilean port of Iquique to complete the first phase of the Oasis de Atacama solar and storage project in northern Chile.
The project, to be developed over seven phases, is set to have a total storage capacity of 11 GWh alongside 2 GW of photovoltaics and will produce around 5.5 TWh of energy annually. The solar-plus-storage facility is expected to power more than 145,000 homes annually while reducing the emission of more than 146,000 tons of CO2. The Chipol Guangan cargo ship, arriving from Dachan, China, has docked after a 42-day voyage carrying 105 containers filled with 1,050 MC Cube ESS modules. These modules offer a total storage capacity of 0.6 GWh. This delivery is part of a strategic partnership with BYD, a multinational technology company, to supply 1.1 GWh of large-scale energy storage using 2,136 Blade modules of the MC Cube ESS model.
The batteries for Phase 3 (Víctor Jara), developed as part of the expanded agreement with BYD, are currently in production and are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2025. Additionally, in October 2024, Grenergy established a strategic partnership with CATL to supply 1.25 GWh of battery storage for Phase 4 of the project.
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Growth Markets Fund II (CI GMF II), has taken the final investment decision (FID) on a 220 MW/1,100 MWh battery energy storage system in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile.
