Independent power producer Clearway Energy has switched on the 147 MW/588 MWh Rosamund Central battery energy storage project in Kern County, California, USA.

Rosamond Central BESS features four-hour lithium-ion batteries located next to Clearway's 192 MW Rosamond Central solar farm, completed in 2020. Construction was led by Rosendin, and Wärtsilä supplied the battery energy storage systems. The project is contracted with Southern California Edison (SCE) under a long-term resource adequacy (RA) agreement, which requires suppliers to ensure sufficient capacity and reserves for the grid operator to maintain a balanced supply and demand across the electric system.

The project represents Clearway’s latest investment in its nearly 850 MW battery energy storage portfolio in operation and construction.
