Canadian Solar Inc. and SOLA Group have signed a 256 MW solar module contract to provide the first two largest utility-scale solar power projects in South Africa, which are based on private power purchase agreements (PPAs).
In the North West Province are two solar farms of 126 MWp and 130 MWp, respectively. SOLA Group and its partners are developing and managing both projects. They will generate 580 GWh of clean, renewable electricity per year, powering 40,000 homes and saving 595 tons of CO2 emissions. Construction began in October 2022, and commercial operation is expected in early 2024.
Canadian Solar will deliver 390,073 BiHiKu7 modules in total. The BiHiKu7 CS7N-MB-AG are bifacial modules based on 210 mm wafers with a maximum power output of 670 W and a maximum efficiency of 21.6%. The BiHiKu7 modules are ideal for utility-scale projects because they save on system-level mounting structure and cable and lower BoS (Balance of System) and LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) prices compared to modules with smaller wafer sizes. Additionally, BiHiKu7 modules are compatible with the majority of inverters and trackers.
