Amazon has announced the achievement of 50 carbon-free energy projects in the United Kingdom, reinforcing its position as the country's largest corporate purchaser of carbon-free electricity for the fifth consecutive year. This milestone was reached following the signing of a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the 90 MW Chirmorie Wind Farm in South Ayrshire, Scotland. Once all 50 projects are operational, Amazon's UK renewable energy portfolio will exceed 1 GW of installed capacity, generating enough clean electricity annually to power the equivalent of more than 1.2 million UK households.

Amazon's UK portfolio now comprises nine utility-scale off-site wind and solar projects alongside 41 on-site solar installations located at its fulfilment centres, logistics facilities, and other operational buildings. Through these investments, Amazon aims to increase the supply of renewable electricity to the national grid while supporting the decarbonisation of its operations, including its expanding network of cloud computing and data centre facilities. The company emphasizes that these projects add new renewable generation capacity to the grid rather than simply purchasing existing clean energy.

The newly announced Chirmorie Wind Farm, developed by egg Power, the renewable energy infrastructure business of Liberty Global, will supply 90 MW of onshore wind capacity under what is described as the largest onshore wind corporate PPA ever signed in the UK. The long-term agreement provides financial certainty for the project, helping to secure investment and accelerate construction while supporting the UK's transition to a cleaner and more secure electricity system.

Globally, Amazon continues to expand its renewable energy footprint with more than 700 renewable energy projects across 28 countries, making it one of the world's largest corporate investors in carbon-free electricity. The company states that its renewable energy strategy supports both its long-term climate commitments and the growing electricity demand from digital infrastructure, including artificial intelligence and cloud computing services, while contributing to national energy security and grid resilience.
