The Netherlands' first PV-powered hydrogen production station, in Oosterwolde, in the Dutch province of Friesland, has been commissioned by Groenleven, the Dutch unit of BayWa re, and Alliander, the Netherlands' largest utility.
Alliander wants to see if grid congestion in the area can be mitigated or avoided, and if hydrogen could lower the amount of money spent on grid expansion.
Alliander will run the hydrogen manufacturing unit, which will be linked to Groenleven's 50 MW solar park nearby. Local taxi firm Kort and fuel provider OrangeGas will acquire the green hydrogen generated at the new facility for an undisclosed amount. It is predicted that 100,000kg of hydrogen can be produced annually, enough for around 10 million clean kilometers of car rides with a passenger car. GroenLeven plans to look into how green hydrogen may be stored and utilized in different ways.
