Aker Offshore Wind and Aker Clean Hydrogen are partnering with DNV GL to develop a 10 GW offshore floating wind farm that will power a hydrogen facility in Scotland.
Named as 'Northern Horizons Project', the floating wind farm will be installed more than 130 km from Shetland. The project will produce green hydrogen that will be transmitted to a net-zero hydrogen refinery. The refinery will produce ammonia, liquid hydrogen, and synthetic fuels that will be used for export and local consumptions. The developers plan to put the project into operation by 2030.
The project was announced at the COP 26 climate summit in Glasgow by Aker Horizons ASA. The proposal is in response to the Scottish government's aim to become a significant hydrogen exporter with a target of up to 5 GW of hydrogen production by 2030.
