The Independent Planning Commission in New South Wales, Australia, has granted development consent for ACEN Australia’s 943 MW Valley of the Winds wind farm located within the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone, approximately 40 km north of Gulgong, between Coolah, Leadville and Uarbry within the Warrambungle Shire local government area.
The Valley of the Winds Wind Farm is expected to produce enough electricity to supply around 519,000 homes annually, supporting the NSW Government’s goals for net-zero emissions and expanded renewable energy use. The 320 MW / 640 MWh BESS will allow renewable energy to be stored and released to the grid when needed, enhancing both grid reliability and energy security. A range of conditions have been attached to the project’s approval to address key concerns. These require ACEN Australia Pty Ltd to:
Develop an aviation management plan in collaboration with the Aerial Application Association of Australia, the NSW Rural Fire Service, and local aerodrome operators to ensure aviation activities, such as aerial firefighting and agricultural operations, can continue safely in the area.
Create both a water sourcing plan and a soil and water management strategy.
Maintain ongoing engagement with the local community through a Community Consultative Committee;
Adhere to designated traffic routes; and
Formulate a comprehensive plan for the project’s eventual decommissioning and site rehabilitation.
