US$12.1 millon contract awarded for 220 kV transmission line in south-east Peru

ProInversion, the infrastructure authority of Peru, has awarded a concession contract for the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the Tintaya-Azángaro transmission line. The line transmit 220 kV between two substations in the south-east of Peru, a mountainous region, spanning 128km. Construction is expected to take five years.

Six companies submitted bids for the project: Redesur (a subsidiary of Red Eléctrica Corporación), Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios, Celeo Redes (a subsidiary of Grupo Elecnor), Interconexión Eléctrica, Abengoa Perú and Conelsur. The contract was awarded to Redesur, who offered to invest US$12.1 millon. It includes operating and maintaining the line for 30 years, which is expected to cost in total US$334.5 million, and also the expansion and modernization of the two substations

Currently, there is only one transmission line in the region, which transmits 138 kV. This Tintaya-Azángaro line will therefore greatly expand the transmission, and therefore availability, of electricity in the south of Pero. Crucially, it will transmit energy produced by two hydroelectric plants in El Ángel and San Gabán, in Puno, the region of the Azángaro substation.

This is one of many transmission lines planned by ProInversión. In 2018, ProInversion hope to award concessions for a 500kV line in the north of Peru, and two 220 kV lines in the north and east
