Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower) has selected a Chinese team of Shandong Electrical Engineering & Equipment Group Company and Zhejiang Narada Power Source Company to build the 58 MW/75 MWh Omburu battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Erongo region of central-west Namibia.
The Omburu BESS will be constructed at the Omburu substation, positioned 12 km southeast of Omaruru town. It will utilize lithium-ion technology and occupy an area of approximately 2 acres, with a projected lifespan of 19 years. NamPower will be responsible for the development, ownership, and operation of the Omburu BESS, while the contractor team will handle the system's operation and maintenance (O&M) for roughly two years post-project completion.
The project will receive EUR20 million (USD21.6 million) in grant funding from Germany's KfW Development Bank. This grant will cover the direct EPC costs, while NamPower will bear the expenses associated with local taxes and duties of the EPC contract, project development costs, and transmission connection and integration costs. NamPower's anticipated contribution to the project is around NAD100 million (USD 5.3 million).
NamPower has invited bids for the development of 40 MW Otjikoto biomass power station in Namibia.
