The Danish Energy Agency has selected Sweco as a technical advisor in the preparatory work to offer the task of constructing the world's first energy island in the North sea.
The agreement runs for four years with the possibility of a one-year extension, and as a minimum the owner and contractor are selected. The technical advisory contract has a value of DKK50 million (US$7.94 million).
Jes Hansen, director of Sweco's Infrastructure, Water & Environment division, said: "The energy island is visionary and must be solved with equal parts experiences and innovations. It is a large-scale development project with a long-term perspective that creates sufficient room for innovation for the benefit of all parties involved. It will form the basis for new green business adventures in Denmark and be a major contribution to green transformation in both Denmark and in Europe and hopefully also to inspiration for the rest of the world".
The energy island project involves the development of an offshore wind project named VindØ in the North Sea. The island is the base for up to 10-gigawatt offshore wind turbines, corresponding to approximately 25 traditional offshore wind farms. It will be the largest construction project in Danish history with an estimated total construction cost of DKK210 billion (US$33.42 billion).
