Ørsted A/S has signed contracts with Hitachi Energy for the supply of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems and converter platforms for its 2,852 MW Hornsea 3 offshore wind project in the UK
Under the contract, Hitachi Energy will supply two HVDC systems, while Aibel of Norway will supply the offshore converter platforms. Contracts are subject to a final investment decision (FID) on Hornsea 3, which could occur as early as the end of 2022.
The wind farm will have the capacity to generate up to 2.85 gigawatts of renewable electricity, enough to power more than three million UK homes. With more than 200 wind turbines installed across almost 700 sq. km. To be located 160 km (99 miles) off the coast of Yorkshire, it will be part of Ørsted's Hornsea zone, which will have a total capacity of more than 5 GW.
