Vistra Energy has announced the completion of Phase III of its Moss Landing Energy Storage facility in Monterey County, California, USA. This expansion brings the total capacity of the facility to 750 MW and 3,000 MWh, solidifying its position as the largest lithium-ion battery energy storage system in the world.
Situated on the grounds of a former gas-powered plant, Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility is part of Vistra's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and their contribution to the growing need for reliable grid storage.
The 350 MW/1.4 MWh expansion of the facility involved the installation of 122 individual containers, which collectively house over 110,000 battery modules. These batteries enable the storage and release of electricity to California's grid, providing much-needed flexibility and stability to the power system. The Phase III expansion achieved commercial operation on June 2, 2023 and is now storing power and releasing it to California's grid. It will operate under a 15-year resource adequacy agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) beginning August 1, 2023.
Xcel Energy has received approval from state regulators to construct a 10 MW / 1000 MWh multi-day energy storage system located on 5 acres of land near the Sherburne County Generating Station in Becker, Minnesota, USA.
