Approval received for development of 10 MW/1000 MWh energy storage project in USA

Xcel Energy has received approval from state regulators to construct a 10 MW/1000 MWh multi-day energy storage system located on 5 ac of land near the Sherburne County Generating Station in Becker, Minnesota, USA. The project aims to maximize the use of renewable energy, aid grid reliability in severe weather conditions, and reduce carbon emissions. Its operations will include storing energy generated by renewable sources during high production and later dispatching it during lower production.

The project is one of two energy storage projects to be installed at the sites of retiring Xcel Energy coal plants, while the other plans to be located at the Comanche Generating Station in Pueblo, Colorado.

With the ability to decrease energy consumption during peak periods and manage renewables efficiently, the project is likely to push Xcel Energy to achieve their goal of 80% carbon reduction by 2030. The construction of the multi-day energy storage system is set to commence in Q2 2024, with operations expected to begin by 2025.
