RWE has connected the 137 MW/ 548 MWh Fifth Standard battery storage project to the Californian grid, USA. The company's first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in the US, will include a 150 MWac solar PV facility, expected to be completed in August, and will cover about 1,600 acres.
The Fifth Standard battery storage system can unload capacity into the grid in a four-hour duration. It is situated in Fresno County, California, and is designed to generate adequate green electricity to power over 26,000 homes. The project aligns with California's clean energy goals, as the state works towards achieving its net-zero objective by 2045.
Preceding the 369,334 solar panels' on-site presence, a racking system and solar trackers have been installed, which will track the sun's movement, leading to better energy output. If any energy is not transferred to the grid, it will be retained in an on-site lithium-ion battery energy storage facility. This energy storage system will empower the project to exercise the best value by discharging solar energy when electric demand is the highest.
Nexus Renewables Inc. has successfully closed financing deals worth approximately US$40 million, aimed at supporting a 310 MW/640 MWh portfolio of battery energy storage projects in the USA.
