BP has completed repowering its 300 MW Fowler Ridge 1 wind farm in northwest Indiana, USA.
The initiative encompassed the enhancement of 40 out of the 162 turbines, incorporating the installation of 120 individual blades and 40 new nacelles, housing power generation equipment and transformers atop the wind towers. The newly integrated Vestas turbines are anticipated to yield up to 40% more energy, generating an estimated average of 314,000 kWh annually. This wind facility has the potential to power approximately 27,000 homes. The upgraded technology demonstrates improved energy efficiency at lower wind speeds, maximizing electricity production from the available wind resources.
The capital investment of the project amounted to around US$100 million, aligning with the company's projected returns for renewable ventures. bp Wind Energy (bpWE) a unit of UK-based oil and gas major BP Plc, currently operates the Fowler Ridge 1, 2, and 3 wind assets, which include 355 turbines spanning more than 42,000 acres and powering roughly 160,000 homes annually.
