The Windplus consortium has sailed the second of the three-turbines platform that forms the 25 MW WindFloat Atlantic floating offshore wind project located 20 kilometers (12.43 miles) off the coast of Viana do Castelo in Portugal.
The structure will be placed exactly 50 meters apart from the other columns. All of the floating platforms consist of one MHI Vestas turbine that is anchored with chains to the seabed at a depth of 100 meters (328.1 ft). The three structures form the first semi-submersible floating wind farm in the world.
The wind farm is owned by the Windplus consortium composed of EDP Renovaveis (54.4%), France’s Engie SA (25%), Repsol (19.4%), and Principle Power Inc. (1.2%).
The three wind turbines are expected to generate enough energy consumed by 60,000 homes over the course of a year once operational.
