Voith Hydro has been awarded the contract to provide electrical and mechanical power plant equipment for the 2,000 MW Snowy 2.0 pumped storage plant in Snowy Mountains in Australia.

Developed by Snowy Hydro Ltd, the project will be connected to the two existing dams of the Snowy Scheme, Tantangara Dam and Talbingo Dam, through underground tunnels and an underground power station with pumping and generating capacity. It will be equipped with six reversible Francis-type pump turbines that can deliver 2,000 MW. The project is also designed for water storage of up to 175 hours.

Voith Hydro has signed the contract with the Future Generation Joint Venture (a joint venture comprised of Salini Impregilo, Clough and Lane) for the supply of six reversible pump turbines, each with a rated output of 333 MW, six motor generators, the auxiliary systems and the complete power plant automation.

“Voith is very proud to be a part of this exciting and important hydropower project and to continue to contribute to Australia’s renewable energy development,” said Uwe Wehnhardt, president and chief executive officer of Voith Hydro.

The Snowy 2.0 pumped storage plant is expected to commence operation by 2024.
