New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has selected two big green energy infrastructure projects to bring clean power to New York City from wind, solar and hydropower projects in upstate New York and Canada.

Transmission Developers Inc. (TDI) and Hydro-Quebec have worked in partnership to develop Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE), an underground electric transmission line covering approximately 339 miles between Canada and New York City. The project will deliver 1,250 MW of clean power to New York City.

The second project, Clean Path New York (CPNY), combines a 1,300 MW, 174-mile underground high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line with over 3,400 MW of new wind and solar projects in upstate New York, with availability and reliability maximized by the existing Blenheim-Gilboa pumped storage facility. The project is a partnership of the New York Power Authority, Invenergy, and energyRe.

Together, two transmission lines will provide about 18 TWh of upstate and Canadian renewable energy per year, equivalent to the needs of over 2.5 million homes.
