Windpark Fryslân has started building wind turbines for 382.7 MW Fryslan nearshore wind project in the IJsselmeer. From March to June 2021, the 89 wind turbines will be shipped, installed and tested.
This is the final phase of the construction project and an important milestone for the wind farm. After all 89 turbines have been connected, they will produce around 1.5 terawatt hours (1,500,000 megawatt hours) of green power annually. This is approximately 75% of all Frisian renewable energy, which corresponds to the energy consumption of approximately 500,000 households.
In recent times, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, preparations have been made for the Fryslân Wind Farm. This involves the construction of 55 kilometers of cable on land and 92 km of cable in the IJsselmeer, the driving of the 89 foundations and the construction of the work and nature island at Kornwerderzand. In addition, contractor consortium Zuiderzeewind which consists of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and Van Oord Offshore Wind is working on the construction of the transformer station on Breezanddijk.
Each wind turbine consists of three tower parts, the nacelle and the rotor. The tower parts and the gondola come to the IJsselmeer via Amsterdam. The three rotor blades are first assembled in Oude Zeug. The complete rotor is attached to the nacelle in one go with Van Oord's enormous installation cranes.
Once commissioned the wind project will become the world's largest wind farm in an inland waterway.
