SolarServe LLC withdrew its federal permit application on January 31, 2019 for the 2 GW Sandstone concentrating solar power (CSP) project. The planned project would be the world’s largest CSP on public land in Nevada desert. The estimated cost to build the project is US$ 5 billion. The project features 10 power towers to produce electricity from the sun for 1 million Californians.
The project was criticized by wildlife defenders for its potential danger to birds and other wildlife.
The project was supposed to start construction in 2020 or 2021. The facility was planned to be completed in phases for 7 years.
The withdrawal of SolarServe application stops the federal approval process for the Sandstone Solar Energy Project. The project is still listed as ¨under development¨ on the company´s website.
