Voltalia has signed a purchase contract for 47 wind turbines with Siemens Gamesa. The turbines will be installed at the Ventos da Serra do Mel power plant in Brazil, a 163 MW wind project won in December 2017.
The project is located in the Serra Branca cluster in Rio Grande do Norte, a state in the north-east of Brazil. This site has the potential to become one of the largest wind energy sites in Latin America. Voltalia already owns over 300 MW in the cluster and there is potential for more than 1.5 GW of possible expansions.
The purchase agreement kicks off the construction phase of the project, which is Voltalia's largest project in Brazil to date. The company is planning to progressively commission the turbines throughout 2020, up to three years ahead of the start of the 20-year power sale contracts. This acceleration will enable Voltalia to start selling power on the free market at attractive prices through short-term contracts that have already been secured before the start of the long-term sale contracts
The 47 wind turbines to be installed (3.465 MW each) are Siemens Gamesa's G-132 model. After the successful construction of the Vila Acre power plant in Brazil last year, this is the second time the company has been selected by Voltalia.
