Snowy Hydro's shareholders have given the approval of the development of Snowy 2.0, a pumped-storage hydro expansion of the existing Snowy Scheme in Australia, after consideration of Board’s Final Investment Decision.
Snowy 2.0 refers to the expansion of pumped hydro capability within the Snowy Scheme, in order to improve energy security by storing large-scale renewable energy to provide rapid-response back up at critical times of peak demand.
In its first stage of construction, the project will see a 2000 MW of underground generation and 29 km of tunnels between existing reservoirs in the Snowy Mountains region. The project will have enough capacity to provide 350,000 MW/h of power for a week, enough to meet peak demand continuously for 500,000 homes.
Snowy 2.0 Exploratory Works will start immediately. The project is expected to generate up to 5000 jobs over the life of the project.
