RES (Renewable Energy Systems) has announced the commissioning of a 20 MW battery storage facility in West Lothian, central Scotland. Built and managed by RES and owned by The Renewables Infrastructure Group (TRIG), the Broxburn Energy Storage facility provides services to National Grid. It charges when there is excess capacity – or ‘too much’ power – on the Grid.
The project will have an operational life of 15 years and will deliver services to the National Grid through a bespoke bilateral agreement to provide dynamic, two-way sub-second grid balancing services supporting National Grid’s move to a more flexible, low carbon energy network.
Livingston-based NRS Group was the main civil works contractor during the GBP1.5 million (US$1.97 million) construction phase. The facility is managed 24-hours a day using RES’ RESolve operating system from the company’s Control Centre in Glasgow.
