Prysmian has completed its activity at RWE’s Sofia Offshore Wind Farm – one of the world’s largest offshore wind projects. The wind farm, which will bring a significant boost to renewable energy within the UK’s energy mix, is located on Dogger Bank, in the North Sea, and will be capable of generating up to 1.4 GW of power for consumers.
Sofia, which covers a site that is larger than the Isle of Man, features 100 turbines and reaches a maximum depth of around 35m. It is located 195 km from the nearest landfall (where the export cable meets the shore). The wind farm site covers an area of almost 593 sq km and features 100 SG 14-222 DD offshore turbines each having a 14 MW capacity. The annual power generation is estimated to be enough for nearly 1.2 million homes.
Prysmian was contracted by RWE for its flagship project in 2021, to take on the design, manufacturing and installation of activities, and has since installed over 450 km of high voltage cables – on land & at sea – using Prysmian’s Leonardo Da Vinci, its deep-sea cable-laying vessel.
