Pohjolan Voima Oyj has started the planning of electricity storage based on lithium-ion batteries. The goal is to build a 35 MW battery solution that could be commissioned in a couple of years’ time. The investment is estimated to be worth EUR20 million (US$24.02 million) and a decision could be made during 2021.

The objectives of the battery project are to increase the flexibility of the electrical power system, to secure the operation of the electrical power system during disturbances, and to support the use of hydropower as a source of regulating power. The batteries connected to the national grid in this project can supply a maximum of 35 MW of power to the system for approximately one hour.

In addition to the battery capacity being planned at the moment, Pohjolan Voima has the option to expand the battery solution as necessary. Benefits of the battery solution include that because of its modular nature, it can be easily expanded and it has a long life cycle. The battery solution, which makes optimal use of the existing infrastructure and the properties of the battery, is becoming a competitive solution for electrical power system flexibility.
