New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has announced Equinor’s Empire Wind and Ørsted and Eversource’s Sunrise Wind as the winners in the state’s first large-scale competitive offshore wind solicitation.
The 880 MW Sunrise Wind project, a joint venture of Denmark's Orsted and US-based Eversource Energy, will be 30 miles east of Long Island's Montauk Point.
Equinor was selected to construct the 816 MW Empire Wind project, which is made up of between 60 to 80 wind turbines that powers more than 500,000 homes. It covers an area of 80,000 acres and is located southeast of Long Island. The project is expected to cost around US$3 billion.
Both projects, which were selected as part of a competitive solicitation, will need to have negotiated long-term contracts with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for offshore wind renewable energy certificates or ORECs.
Commercial operation is scheduled in 2024.
